Squirrel Hill is considered one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the Pittsburgh region. Five minutes from downtown Pittsburgh, Squirrel Hill combines tree-lined residential streets, bustling business districts, authentic eateries, internationally-recognized educational institutions, and over 1100 acres of parks for its residents and visitors.

[two_one_first]Squirrel Hill is a vibrant, dynamic community. A thriving business district offers a wide variety of non-chain shopping and restaurants options. Over 1100 acres of public parks provide countless opportunities for recreation and enjoyment within less than three square miles – some areas of the parks are as they were when the Indians used them as hunting grounds. With luck, you might spot a deer, fox, raccoon, possum or even a turkey!

Squirrel Hill is one of the most affluent and well educated in the region. Squirrel Hill is home to two universities, Chatham University and Carnegie Mellon University.  Two others—the University of Pittsburgh and Carlow University—as well as the region’s medical center, UPMC, are just down the road.This variety creates a broad range of housing options, from modest apartments to multimillion dollar homes. According to Kiplinger Magazine, home prices range from $50,000 to over a million, with a median price of $184,000.

Since the 1920s, Squirrel Hill has been the center of the Jewish community. According to a 2002 study by the United Jewish Federation, a third of greater Pittsburgh’s Jewish population lives in Squirrel Hill. Counting adjacent communities, the Squirrel Hill area accounts for over 40% of the Jewish population in Pittsburgh.

For over fifty years, the Coalition has been an active and important link in the community. It has served as a sounding board for new ideas, as well as a “watchdog” in the areas of public safety, education, residential quality, the business district, and parks and open space. With its focus on the quality of life in the 14th Ward, SHUC continues to monitor activities and future developments in the community through a range of standing committees.
