Street trees in the business district have been a priority since 2007 when SHUC first began planting on Forbes. Attempts to plant Murray have been more difficult but there have been some successes with private property owners, Giant Eagle and Brandywine Agency for example.
SHUC coordinates with the various parks groups, the City Forrester and the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy on maintaining the health of our Squirrel HiIl parks.
A TreeVitalize application is submitted by SHUC twice a year to secure funding for spring and fall plantings in our residential areas and in the business district. The City Forester applies for trees in our parks.
This resource offers a great opportunity for Squirrel Hill residents to contribute to the community’s vitality, one tree at a time. Simply fill out the Tree Request Form and mail it to Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition’s main office at 5604 Solway Street or scan and email to parks@shuc.org. We’ll forward your request – along with your neighbors’ – on to the city’s forestry division.
Please consider planting a tree. After all, it’s free!

The Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition is launching the “ReGreen Beechwood Boulevard” project, a multi-year initiative to plant approximately 350 trees along one of Pittsburgh’s most historic corridors.
This effort seeks to restore the original “City Beautiful” vision for the boulevard, which was designed in the 1890s by Edward Manning Bigelow and later identified by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. as a key “pleasure drive” connecting Schenley and Highland Parks.
The project addresses the urgent issue of significant tree loss from storms, disease, and age, which has occurred at a faster rate in this area than many other neighborhoods.
Beginning in Fall 2025, the phased planting will enhance the ecological health, beauty, and walkability of the boulevard, benefiting residents, commuters, and participants in major events like the Great Race and PedalPGH.
If you are a homeowner on Beechwood Blvd, you can support the project by returning the tree request form.
