This #DayofGiving, September 21 (8am to midnight), you can give the gift of a vibrant, sustainable Squirrel Hill community with a donation to the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition at PittsburghGives. Thanks to the generosity of our SHUC Board of Directors and our Coalition members, every dollar you give will be matched up to $10,000 at givingday.pittsburghgives.org.
While we have been your quiet and hard-working neighbor for the past 43 years, the time has come to make a little noise and toot our own horn. Powered by volunteers, your Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition has been working hard to preserve, improve, and celebrate life in our neighborhood!
• Beautifying Squirrel Hill—Over $740,000 has been raised for improving the streetscape in the Squirrel Hill commercial district. A newly renovated Post Office parklet, streetlamps, trees, and Welcome to Squirrel HIll sign!
• Solarize Squirrel Hill—In partnership with Solarize Allegheny, we worked to connect homeowners to solar installers, to great success! More than 70 households are currently on contract or signed up to potentially go solar!
• Litter Patrol: During our annual 2016 Spring Clean-up, more than 120 Pittsburghers of all ages volunteered and picked up 400 pounds of trash and recyclables on the streets and sidewalks of Squirrel Hill!
• Squirrel Hill Magazine is a free, quarterly community magazine with 16,500 circulation and mailed directly to zip 15217!
Your gift will allow us to continue to bring about more of these programs, projects and events including:
• Collaborations with our community partners–we are bringing back crowd favorites like the Squirrel Hill Night Market and Night Out with SHUC!, The Squirrel Hill Lunar New Year Celebration in February drew thousands to the festival at the JCC and many times more to the Murray Avenue parade.
• Focus on Education: The re-invigoration of our Education Committee will mean even greater support for students, parents and educators in our neighborhood’s schools.
• Stormwater Task Force: Working with our partners in Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority, among others, we are mapping the best potential Green Infrastructure (GI) sites for building stormwater mitigation projects in the 14th Ward.
