You may have noticed PWSA sending you packets in the mail or tearing up sidewalks. Why are they doing this? Firstly, they are putting holes in the sidewalks to get a sample of what material your pipes are made of. They need these samples in order to find out if your pipes are made of lead and therefore need to be replaced. PWSA will replace the waterline to your house free of charge if they find lead and you return the signed packet to them. If you do not consent to your waterline being replaced and it is found to be lead PWSA can terminate water utilities to your home.
The main objective forPWSA is to replace our aging water mains. There are a few things to know about them replacing these water mains.
Water outages – Water will only be shut off from the streets when they disconnect the old water main and connect the new water main which should result in outages no longer than a day.
Sidewalks – Squirrel Hill has several water mains that run under sidewalks. This will cause PWSA to tear up the sidewalks while they are working on the streets.
Personal water lines – Most personal water lines found to be lead will be repaired with trenchless replacements. This means minimal damage to your yard.
Damage – Any damage that is done to sidewalks, roads, or yards will be repaired by PWSA

Preserving, Improving, and Celebrating the Quality of Life in Squirrel Hill
For over fifty years, the Coalition has been an active and important link in the community. It has served as a sounding board for new ideas, as well as a “watchdog” in the areas of public safety, education, residential quality, the business district, and parks and open space. With its focus on the quality of life in the 14th Ward, SHUC continues to monitor activities and future developments in the community through a range of standing committees.
