Celebrate Earth Day with SHUC!


Throughout the month of April SHUC and our partner organizations are hosting a number of events to clean up our community and celebrate Earth Day. Come out to support our beautiful parks and outdoor spaces during one of the events below!

Tree Pittsburgh presents Tree Care: Squirrel Hill

Join Tree Pittsburgh for one of their Tree Care events in Squirrel Hill. Meet at the corner of Forbes and Murray Avenues on April 19th to care for the trees planted in Squirrel Hill’s business district. Activities include weeding, mulching, adjusting stakes, and taking care of the neighborhood’s next generation of trees. Gloves and tools will be provided. Register for the event using this form. Squirrel Hill Clean Sweep Week

SHUC’s Litter Patrol invites you, your family, and friends to remove litter from a block (or more) of your choice between April 22 and May 1. You decide the day, time, and location, and we’ll provide the supplies on Sunday, April 24. Don’t forget to take clean up photos and submit them to info@shuc.org for a chance to win local merchant gift cards! Register for the Clean Sweep Week here.

SHUC Community Clean Up

Come to the corner of Forbes and Murray Avenues on April 24th for SHUC’s annual Big Community Clean Up! Spend time picking up litter in our neighborhood. Bags, safety vests, and gloves will be provided. Please bring your own water bottle. And remember to take photos for a chance to win a gift card from a local merchant. Mellon Park Arbor Day celebration

Friends of Mellon Park, in partnership with Tree Pittsburgh and the city of Pittsburgh, is hosting a family-friendly Arbor Day celebration at Mellon Park on Saturday, April 30th. Celebrate one of the East End’s favorite city parks with arts and crafts, tree plantings, lawn games, live music, food and more!

Wightman Park Litter Patrol Event

Friends of Wightman Park kicks off their summer series of park clean ups on May 1st! Complete this form to register for the event. If you can’t attend, please consider donating to the Friends of Wightman Park to support the park’s ongoing maintenance. Help us keep this neighborhood treasure clean and welcoming!

For over fifty years, the Coalition has been an active and important link in the community. It has served as a sounding board for new ideas, as well as a “watchdog” in the areas of public safety, education, residential quality, the business district, and parks and open space. With its focus on the quality of life in the 14th Ward, SHUC continues to monitor activities and future developments in the community through a range of standing committees.
