Update (12/10/2020): Redwood Tree Replacements at Allderdice
Special thanks to Ray Baum and Dalia Belinkoff for helping to make this happen with a financial contribution. Thank you to Jake and the Team at Tree Pittsburgh for taking care of the planting!
07/27/2020: Alderdice’s Trees
2020 has been a stressful year for us all – including the trees at our very own Allderdice High School! The trees are all alive, but need a bit of extra love, attention, and water right now.
Our friends at Tree Pittsburgh have generously offered to water the trees every Wednesday, but we still need volunteers to water them on Mondays and Fridays.
If, like most of us, you have never watered the trees at Allderdice (or used a Gator Bag to water trees in general), please join us at Allderdice this Friday at 9:30am for a quick tutorial. Masks are required.
Can’t make it on Friday? You can still volunteer! Contact jake@treepittsburgh.org with questions.
Watering Instructions
Tree Pittsburgh has installed “Gator Bags” on all of the trees to make watering a bit easier. These bags hold 20 gallons and are designed to release the water slowly over the course of several hours. To use the gator bags, simply put the hose in the hole at the top of the gator bag and let it fill up. Note: Don’t put the hose in the area between the gator bag and the tree. Look for the hole that actually fills up the bag.
Here is a video that shows you how to use a Gator Bag:
Please be sure to spool the hose back up when you’re done and make sure the water is turned off!!!
The Squirrel Hill Business District in collaboration with Pittsburgh City Council hosted a highly successful National Night Out event. The community came together in full force, making it a memorable evening of unity, fun, and engagement.
Families are invited to pose, stretch, and have fun during Lil’ Yoga at The Ellis School on Saturday, September 23. A family-focused, outdoor yoga class will be led by seasoned yoga instructor Danyelle Sharps of Studio Z Yoga. This event is FREE, open to the public, and designed for children 5 and under. Children must attend with a parent or guardian, and advance registration is required.
Preserving, Improving, and Celebrating the Quality of Life in Squirrel Hill
For over fifty years, the Coalition has been an active and important link in the community. It has served as a sounding board for new ideas, as well as a “watchdog” in the areas of public safety, education, residential quality, the business district, and parks and open space. With its focus on the quality of life in the 14th Ward, SHUC continues to monitor activities and future developments in the community through a range of standing committees.
