Commercial/ Residential Quality

The Commercial Development and Residential Quality Committee focuses on:

  1. Stimulating the vitality of our business district, particularly, but not limited to, the Forbes, Murray and Forward Avenue corridors; and works closely with the Squirrel Hill business and professionals association,Uncover Squirrel Hill; and
  2. Maintaining the quality of residential life in the 14th Ward by reviewing zoning issues and proposals for residential construction.

It creates neutral forums between those seeking to make changes and those affected by them in order to find ways of making projects most mutually beneficial. The Committee may take positions, or recommend that the Coalition take positions, on zoning and design issues before appropriate City departments or boards. Developers often approach the Coalition for our feedback and/or support. We then have an opportunity to work with owners and developers to create and maintain a neighborhood of which we can be proud. We have developed memorandums of understanding with large institutions (e.g. Carnegie Mellon University) to lessen impact and better integrate programs and goals of institutions with those of nearby residents.

about SHUC

Preserving, Improving, and Celebrating the Quality of Life in Squirrel Hill

For over fifty years, the Coalition has been an active and important link in the community. It has served as a sounding board for new ideas, as well as a “watchdog” in the areas of public safety, education, residential quality, the business district, and parks and open space. With its focus on the quality of life in the 14th Ward, SHUC continues to monitor activities and future developments in the community through a range of standing committees.
