Getting Saintly in Squirrel Hill

By Katie Hatcher, Intern

While spring hasn’t quite sprung in Pittsburgh just yet, we’re starting to see some green with St. Patrick’s Day coming up this weekend. After you’ve seen the St. Patrick’s Day Parade downtown (starting at 10:00 a.m.) and perused the Irish Fair in the Square in Market Square, continue the festivities a little closer to home with some of Squirrel Hill’s more green, white, and orange-inspired establishments.

Silky’s Sports Bar and Grill
With a fun, homey atmosphere and affordable food and drinks, Silky’s is the perfect spot for partaking in some Irish shenanigans. So grab some pals and sit yourselves down with a pint of Guinness or a Jameson on the rocks and you’ll wonder if you’ve teleported to Dublin.

Squirrel Hill Flower Shop
Everyone needs something green on St. Patrick’s Day, so send all your special someones a little something emerald from Squirrel Hill Flower Shop. They’re running specials on all their Irish-inspired bouquets and plants from now through the end of the week!

Gaby et Jules

If your sweet tooth needs a fix on St. Paddy’s Day, swing by Gaby et Jules and pick up their St. Patrick’s Day Collection box: 12 macrons all very on theme in green. They’re also bringing back a favorite from last year, Le Flanegan, a very cute little top hat-shaped pastry that’ll make you want to say “Top ‘o’ the mornin’” to everyone you meet. I’ve also heard rumors of a Guinness ganache, but you didn’t hear it from me.

Prohibition Pastries

This bakery infuses locally produced craft beverages into all its pastries — from savory pies like Steak & Stout or Broccoli & Beer Cheese, to cupcakes and cookies. Try an Irish Breakfast cupcake or the Blackstrap’s Booty, made with chocolate stout.

Blue Monkey Tea

A cup of Irish Breakfast tea with a scone or shortbread cookie makes for a quick and easy snack for tea time. Blue Monkey Tea also carries a few sweets from the Emerald Isle, including ones that look like potatoes. Want something more green? Check out the matcha tea collection.

St. Patrick’s Day is an excellent excuse to hang out on a patio with a pint and your friends. Considering that March 17 actually falls on a Saturday this year, it sounds to me like the perfect opportunity to get inspired by the folks on the other side of the pond right here in Squirrel Hill. Sláinte!
